An Evening with Lea DeLaria

Lea DeLaria visited campus Wednesday night and spoke to a full crowd in Alumni Hall as part of one of the many events happening this week for National Coming Out Week, sponsored by the Penn State LGBTQA Student Resource Center.

DeLaria, a comedian, jazz musician, and actress, is best known for her role as Carrie “Big Boo” Black on the Netflix Original Series, Orange is the New Black. Orange is the New Black is a comedy-drama that takes place at Litchfield Penitentiary, an all women’s minimum-security prison. Her character can be described as an intimidating and sarcastic, often using her size and her butch identity to intimidate the other inmates.

DeLaria’s message to the Penn State Community was one of encouragement and advice, accompanied by humor.

I’m not the kind of person that’s going to be heavy handed with you, I’m not going to cram a lot of wisdom down your gullets, that’s not what I do. But if you walk away with something from what I have to say today, if you walk out of here tonight, please walk out of here with this one thing, this one thing. No fucks given. You do not have to apologize to anyone for who or what you are. No fucks given. Okay. Absolutely.”

She touched on issues that plague the LGBT Community as well as some of the recent victories through legislation, most notably Same-Sex Marriage legalization. “I am so happy about that decision. I am so happy that the supreme court did that cause now even I can get drunk marry a hooker in the Elvis Chapel”.

DeLaria’s humor kept the crowd laughing the whole time and inspired many in the audience. Before the question and answer time began, DeLaria closed with a chant often done by members of Penn State’s LGBTQA community:

We Are…Penn State! We Are..Not Straight!
