Numb

How can you know if the strong hand is not another empty emotion? How do you know if the strong hand is the fire you need? You don’t.

The feeling of hollowness is something many of us have endured. It’s the feeling of nothing. No emotions, no pains, just pure numbness. You continue to go through the waves of life… cause it is all you know how to do. You try to fill the achy void with things to distract your mind from the pitless abyss inside your fragile body. You think “hmm..maybe if I do this, I will feel alive again” and pray it ignites the fire you once had to live. But instead, you cover the hole with muck to subdue the hurt.

The feeling of numbness is odd. The things you admired becomes dispensable and the people you cared for become another somebody. You lose interest in yourself and most importantly, you lose interest in your dreams. You use people in search of finding the key to your lost happiness; instead you gain empty hope and wet pillow cases.

Trying to find love in something that has no love to give is one of the many things that expands the hole within you. You give all your energy, time, body to this something to only end up forty steps back into your deep abyss within. The hollowness within is something many of us can not escape without the help of a willing hand, but many times, the strong hand you long for is untouchable. You look at it with widened eyes and cower away back into your darkness. How can you know if the strong hand is not another empty emotion? How do you know if the strong hand is the fire you need? You don’t.

About Brianna Thompson (4 Articles)
I am a sophomore double majoring in Political Science and African-American Studies; hoping and wishing to attend Law School. Having recently experienced what I call a rebirth, I have newfound interest in writing to express the feelings within myself. A proud Black Jamaican, I describe myself as funny and loving, yet truthful and cold. Don’t worry, I still love people, almost as much as I enjoy watching anime marathons, the latest Netflix series, and anything by Shonda Rimes.
